Where did you go to college?
I went to college at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

What is your favorite thing about University Park Elementary?
Some of the aspects of University Park that I like are the diversity and energy of the students, our involved parents, the very talented staff, and the supportive leadership of our principal. But my favorite part is that it’s a comfortable and inviting place to come to  work every single day.

If a school day suddenly got canceled, how would you spend the day?

I would begin my day by not hearing an alarm clock go off. After coffee and newspaper time, I would go for a swim, read an engrossing novel, and enjoy a relaxing meal with friends.

Retha Jenkins
Librarian

What year did you begin teaching?

I started teaching in 1998.

Where did you go to college?

I graduated from CSU (Go Rams!). Although I majored in microbiology, I had this work-study with a group called the CSU Little Shop of Physics. It was a traveling physics road show (kind of like Mr. Wizard's World). The college students did presentations and made physics experiments for students all along the front range to enjoy and explore. I thought: "If teaching is really this much fun, count me in!" After working at National Jewish for a summer, I went on to complete my alternative teaching license at Stanley British Primary School.

What is your favorite thing about University Park Elementary?
I think UPark is a diverse and happy school. I've worked at other schools, public and private...It seems that here, you sincerely "take joy in your journey."

If a school day suddenly got canceled, how would you spend the day?

...WITH MY KIDS! Children's museum, biking, building with junk, snacking, reading, snuggling, and having a "Silly Songs w/Larry" karaoke contest (Mr. Jenkins would probably hang out and participate in his own way).

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
My Big Mama's chicken tamales...mmm...

If you weren't a teacher, what do you think your job would be?

Good question...cognition scientist/neurologist, museum curator, librarian...something along those lines. Also, I'm not ashamed to say that being a full-time parent is an awesome job and not a "waste of a college degree." That would always be in the mix as a possibility.
