We welcome all our new & returning students, staff, & families to our 2014-15 school year!  This is an exciting year for us, with lots of new faces joining our staff, new processes in place to help us communicate (and go "green!"), and the second year of our Blended Learning grant!  We can't wait to see everyone during registration and at our Supply Drop-off / Family Picnic night!

Do I need to register??

YES!!  Every child must be registered every year by a legal guardian, during one of the registration times listed below.  This is when we verify all information, have required documents signed, hand out important information for the school year, and ensure you are signed up to receive important information throughout the year from DPS, Teachers, and University Park staff.

Do I need to bring my child to registration??

No, your child does not need to be present.  However, it is fine to have them stay with you while you complete any necessary paperwork during the registration process.

Registration: August 18th (7am-3pm), August 19th (11am-7pm)

Meet Your New Teacher!

UPark UNews: April 8-11, 2014

From the Principal
Please note the time change for the Wednesday, April 9 Community Forum for the principal selection is 5pm-6pm NOT 4pm-5pm.

It is hard to believe that it is already spring break! We have successfully completed all of the TCAP testing for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. Students and staff are ready for a well-deserved break.

Spring break for students is from March 29 through April 7, 2014. Children return to classes on Tuesday, April 8. University Park staff will be involved in professional development and planning on Monday, April 7.

Collaborative School Committee still needs volunteers for the 2014-2015 school year. We are seeking two parents who are interested in being involved on the advisory committee to support our school improvement efforts. The committee meets once a month and makes recommendations to the principal on a variety of topics including budget, staffing, and school improvement efforts. Please consider being a member!

Dr. Williams is scheduled to return on Wednesday, April 23 and will be here for the remainder of the school year.

Enjoy the spring break!

Lost and Found is Overflowing!

Check out all of the items that are in the Lost and Found located in the cafeteria. There are many hats, gloves and jackets that must be claimed! Please help us clear the lost and found before we donate the items to charity.

From the PTA
BLENDED LEARNING...Have you ever wondered what this is? Please join us for our PTA meeting on April 17 at 6pm to find out. University Park Elementary was awarded a $50,000 grant last year from Janus to utilize the Blended Learning program in our school. A large chunk of the grant was used on technology, but it was also used on ongoing training and information sharing for our teachers. This year, UPark was lucky enough to receive a second grant from Janus to continue the great work. Please come to this meeting to learn about the grant and what it means to your child. Plus, we will have student stations, where students will be able to showcase what they have learned so far. Anna Kwan, Jennifer Morton, Jennifer Wilson and Sue Bryers, who are all a part of our Blended Learning team, will be presenting. The PTA will be providing free child care for all potty trained children!

Attention All Second and Fourth Grade Families
Naglieri screener notification letters were sent home via Thursday folders earlier this month. Since the letters were sent home, date changes have occurred due to computer lab usage. Please note the following updates:

April 8th – McDaniels, Archambault and Bryers
April 14th – Dodd and Holdeman
April 15th – Morton and Durkee

If you have any questions or would like an additional copy of the notification letter, please email Heather Wise,GT Teacher. Thank you!

From UPark Green Team
Attention all UPark parents and students! Did you know that UPark Elementary School has been composting and recycling for over a year now?! The school started its composting program in January 2013! While we mainly compost in the lunchroom, we also compost paper towels and facial tissues in the classrooms. Green Team students help with this process, but the entire kitchen staff and facilities maintenance team pitches in, too. Now the student Green Team needs YOUR help! Please pack lunches and snacks in reusable containers, not plastic baggies. And please help by providing students with reusable forks and spoons. This will reduce the amount of trash the lunchroom produces, and continue the greening efforts of our school! Let's diminish the amount of trash and waste and increase our awareness of how we all can help make the Earth a "green" planet...one school at a time! For more information, or for comments or questions, please contact Erin Coyne Kammerzell, Green Up Our Schools parent liaison. Thank you!
